AFRICAN PROVERB: “Our love is like the misty rain that falls softly, but floods the river…”

Avalanche of Mud Pies

Prying open eyes encrusted with Sand Man’s dust I wobbled in penguin style throughout my un-curtained home to watch raindrops splatter and pool, a rare sight in this land of drought where landscapes shift from shimmering shades of green to murky brown. To my delight and dismay we were being crushed by a mountain of dense ocean fog, the kind that inspires bizarre daydreams of mystical beings romping under and through the barren limbs of deciduous trees.

Spellbound by nature’s wonderland I walked outside and shivered as delicate wind currents whistled around my soul turning my insides into icicle bones and, yet, I shuffled clockwise to gaze into the dazzling cloud of gray, all the while, raindrops matted my hair into a wet Albert Einstein knotted mop, and my eyes probed the abalone sheen of bitter cold mist in search of a unicorn’s horn.

Alas, a mighty gust of wind shook the trees, a shower of pine cones pelted the ground and I scurried back inside where I belonged knowing bone dry hillsides morph into trembling mud pies that avalanche. And yet, I thanked Mother Nature for the foggy misty rain because we need water to survive praying the storm would cover our mountain peaks with white snow caps adorned with icicles and snowflakes.

Foggy Misty Rain

Ellen Degeneres jokes about Southern California’s 1st rain storm of the season: “For those of you watching around the world, it’s been a tough couple of days for us. It has been raining. We’re fine. Thank you for your prayers.”

Aftermath of Foggy Misty Rain

My friends greeted Oscar Sunday, March 2, 2014, with the death of their avocado tree.

While they labored to cut down the limbs blocking the street,

squirrels mourned the loss of the fruit they feasted on.
